Iceland in winter

Is it really that cold in winter?

Iceland in winter

North west coast

We started our tour by heading to the north west coast. First stop was some beach to check on sunbathing seals. After that we stop around some almost organic looking cliffs, which probably inspired this troll statue. And the final stop was famous black church which looked much happier in the sunset rays.

Frozen north

A bit more to the north and we reached the peak that I wanted to see for many-many years. A iconic conic mountain of Iceland with a name I can't pronounce.

Road to the south

First stop was a continental rift — where American and European tectonic plates meet. And some we checked on the geysers and waterfalls of the Golden Circle

Glacier hike

That was another big dream of mine. Hiking on the ice and then going into small ice cave. Each year caves appear at new locations due to under-glaciers rivers in the summer

Diamond beach

The lagoon itself was mostly frozen, but still was possible to find some beautiful icy diamonds on the beach

Black beach of Vik

And the final stop was black beaches around Vik. In winter there are much less people around.

Recommendations

The tour was organized by Soroka Poletila — saved a lot of time and money.

What's left behind the frame but highly recommended:

  • Hot springs!
  • South waterfalls — the biggest are not frozen
  • Cushy moss lava fields
  • Icelandic tomato farm

And about the winter coldness — only the north and glaciers were really cold. In the south many waterfalls still flow, although the path to them can be covered in ice. The coldness of the north it was especially nice to dip into hot springs
